Giving to Caesar and Giving to God: Living Our Faith in the World

Reflecting on Matthew 22: 15-22

In Matthew 22:15-22, Jesus is confronted with a challenging question from the Pharisees and the Herodians: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Their question is a trap, designed to force Jesus into a difficult political position. But Jesus responds with wisdom, asking them to show him the coin used to pay the tax. When they identify Caesar’s image on the coin, Jesus declares, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Jesus’ response is brief, but its meaning invites us to reflect deeply on our priorities, our responsibilities, and our faith.

The coin bears Caesar’s image, but what bears God’s image? Scripture reminds us that every human being is created in the image of God. We belong to God, and our lives are meant to reflect God’s love, grace, and compassion. While we have responsibilities in our communities and in the world around us, our ultimate identity rests in the God who created us and calls us to love our neighbors.

This passage challenges us to consider what we give to God. Is our faith something we set aside for Sunday mornings, or does it shape how we live each day? Do our words reflect kindness? Do our actions demonstrate compassion? Do we make room for those who feel forgotten, welcome those who feel excluded, and offer help to those who are struggling?

Giving to God is about more than money or possessions. It means offering our time, our talents, our resources, and our hearts in service to others. It means seeking justice, practicing forgiveness, extending generosity, and showing love even when it is difficult. Through these everyday acts, we reflect the image of God within us and share Christ’s love with the world.

Jesus does not call us to withdraw from the world but to live faithfully within it. We can be responsible citizens, caring neighbors, and active members of our communities while remembering that our deepest allegiance belongs to God. Our faith guides how we respond to the needs of others and reminds us that every person has dignity and worth.

As we go about our daily lives, may we remember that we bear God’s image. May our choices, our relationships, and our actions reveal whose we are. And may we generously give to God what belongs to God: our hearts, our lives, and our love.

Prayer: Gracious God, you have created us in your image and called us to live as reflections of your love. Help us fulfill our responsibilities with wisdom and integrity, and guide us to serve our neighbors with generous hearts. May our words and actions honor you and bring hope to the world.
